Variable speed angle grinders give you control that fixed-speed models simply can't match. Dial the RPM down for polishing or delicate surface work. Push it up for heavy grinding or cutting through steel. That flexibility makes them useful across metalworking, fabrication, masonry and automotive jobs.
Disc size matters. Most angle grinders use 115mm or 125mm discs for general use. Larger 230mm models handle tougher material removal but add weight. For sustained use overhead or in tight spaces a lighter grinder reduces fatigue significantly.
Look at the amp rating on corded models. A 1200W motor handles light grinding. Serious metalwork demands 2000W or above. Cordless angle grinders have improved a lot - an 18V brushless motor with a high-capacity battery now competes well with corded tools for most site tasks.
Soft-start is a feature worth paying for. It prevents the disc from jerking on startup which extends disc life and improves safety. Electronic overload protection is another sign of a well-built tool. Cheap grinders skip these and burn out under heavy load.
Always match the disc type to the task. Grinding discs are not cutting discs. Using the wrong one increases the risk of disc failure and is a leading cause of workshop injuries.
